It is a common cancer that mostly affects middle aged and elderly men. It is quite rare in the under 50s.

We don’t know what causes prostate cancer, but there is a family history of the disease in about one in ten patients.

Research is ongoing to find out more about the causes. Scientists think, for example, that there may be a link between high fat diets and prostate cancer - but this is not known for certain.
