The single most important way to cut your risk of getting this cancer (and most others) is by not smoking.

If you'd like to give up, ask your GP or health centre for advice, or contact the UK charity QUIT. Alternatively, our help and support section also has details of local smoking cessation services.

You can cut your risk further by not drinking heavily, especially spirits.

If you have had cancer of the larynx, giving up smoking and drinking less will reduce the risk of the cancer coming back. It will also reduce the side effects of treatment and help healing.

The Department of Health website has useful information on drinking sensibly and smoking.

The World Cancer Research Fund has a leaflet about reducing your risk of mouth and throat cancers.
